The Wicklow Way begins in Marlay Park in south Dublin, and this first stage climbs quickly out of the suburbs onto the flanks of Kilmashogue and Fairy Castle, before dropping through the Glencullen valley and over Knockree to the pretty estate village of Enniskerry.
Waymarking is excellent throughout, on a mix of forest track, boardwalk and quiet road. Highlights include the viewpoint over Dublin Bay from Fairy Castle ridge and the first real taste of the Wicklow uplands — a fine introduction to Ireland's oldest waymarked trail.
