The Great Sugar Loaf (501m) looks every inch a volcano but is in fact a resistant quartzite cone — and its distinctive profile dominates north Wicklow. From the Red Lane car park the climb is short but finishes with a steep, rocky scramble to the bare summit.
The effort-to-view ratio is unbeatable: Dublin Bay, the Wicklow Mountains and the Irish Sea spread out from a summit that feels far higher than it is. Wear proper footwear for the loose rock on the final cone, and expect company on fine weekends.
