Leaving the great glacial trench of Glenmalure, this stage of the Wicklow Way climbs over the forested shoulders of Slieve Maan and Carrickashane, the last real hills of the route southbound, before descending into the gentler countryside around Moyne.
The walking is mostly on forest track and quiet mountain road, with long peaceful stretches where you may not meet another soul. Southbound walkers feel the range relaxing behind them; northbound, this is where the mountains begin.
