The Vartry Reservoir was built in the 1860s to supply Dublin with water, and today its lakes near Roundwood are ringed by a fine waymarked walking route. The loop follows woodland paths, reservoir embankments and quiet tracks with constant views over the water to the surrounding hills.
Gradients are gentle throughout, making this a great option for a relaxed half-day, with plenty of birdlife on the lakes. Roundwood village, at the midpoint, is well supplied with cafés and pubs.
