Tonelagee (817m) is the third-highest mountain in Wicklow, and this circuit combines its summit with the rim of the corrie holding Lough Ouler, the famous heart-shaped lake. The classic view of the heart, from the ridge northeast of the summit, is one of the finest sights in the range.
The route climbs steep, rough slopes from the Glenmacnass valley, and the descent crosses wet, peaty ground — expect bog whatever the season. Navigation on the broad summit dome needs care in mist.
