Between Killucan and Mullingar the Royal Canal climbs through its longest flight of locks to the summit level, then settles into a beautiful tree-lined course through the Westmeath countryside, including the deep, atmospheric cutting approaching Mullingar.
The towpath greenway is flat and firm the whole way, and Mullingar's harbour area makes a satisfying finish. As with all canal stages, it's a linear walk — the rail line shadows the canal for easy returns.
