The Great South Wall was the longest sea wall in the world when completed in the 18th century, and walking its granite spine out to the red Poolbeg Lighthouse remains one of Dublin's most distinctive outings. The city and mountains form the backdrop while ships pass close by in the shipping channel.
The wall is exposed to wind and spray — in rough weather waves can break across it, so save it for a settled day. The full outing from the Irishtown/Sandymount side adds beach and nature reserve walking to the wall itself.
