The opening stage of the Royal Canal Way begins where the canal meets the Liffey at Spencer Dock and threads through Dublin's northside — past Croke Park, the Brendan Behan memorial at Binns Bridge and a rising staircase of city locks — to the leafy suburbs at Ashtown.
Entirely flat and urban, it's a walk of canal-bank life, railway heritage and city history, with stations along the way making any section easy to sample. The famous 'Deep Sinking' and open countryside lie just beyond Ashtown for those continuing west.
