Mweelrea (814m) is the highest mountain in Connacht and one of Ireland's great mountain days. Rising straight from the shores of Killary Harbour — Ireland's only fjord — it offers a wild, remote-feeling horseshoe over rough, steep ground.
This is a demanding loop for experienced hillwalkers only: the terrain is pathless in places, the drops above the Ramp and into the northern corries are serious, and the weather off the Atlantic changes fast. The reward is arguably the finest summit view in the west of Ireland, from the Twelve Bens to Croagh Patrick.
