The Gleniff Horseshoe road loops through a vast glacial amphitheatre beneath the cliffs of Ben Bulben and Benwiskin, whose swooping profile is one of the most dramatic sights in the northwest. The circuit passes the old barytes mill ruins and, high in the cliffs, the cave of Diarmuid and Gráinne of legend.
Walked on the quiet valley road, the horseshoe suits most fitness levels; experienced hillwalkers can extend onto the plateau above (with care — the cliff edges are serious). Yeats country at its most theatrical.
